How do you figure room square footage?

Formula: Take the length of the room multiplied by the width of the room = square footage, add 5% for trimming.

Are hardwood floors expensive and are they cost effective?

According to a recent survey of residential real estate agents conducted by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), homes with hardwood flooring hold their value better, sell faster, and fetch higher prices than comparable properties. Approximately 58% say wood floors in a home help the home to bring a higher market price. They provide "beauty that lasts a lifetime".

What color and type of wood product should I buy?

Your flooring, other than your wall color, provide the largest expanse of color in a room. Therefore, choose a color and flooring that will enhance your personal style. Lighter tones create a more contemporary look, but in some instances, they can provide a nice casual or country atmosphere. Darker tones are associated with a more traditional and formal setting. However, in today's interior designs, that is not always the case. It seems there are no real rules anymore. So, make your home's individuality your own and let it reflect your own personal style by choosing what is appealing to you.

Engineered versus Solid Construction?

An engineered product's actual construction counteracts the natural tendency for wood, which is a living item, to contract and expand with the seasonal changes, humidity, or lack of moisture. Therefore, they tend to be more stable.

Solids are very popular in that they provide a natural plank beauty. They give a "sanded in place" look and provide a quiet performance and smooth look and are ideal for the busy home or office.

Calculating Required Moulding Usage:

When buying "X" amount of flooring, the moulding requirements needed would be 20% - 40% of the square footage used, depending on the profile needed. If you use 20,000 square feet of flooring, you will need between 2,000 - 4,000 lineal feet of base or trim moulding.

Baseboard, Shoe and Quarter Round are normally calculated at 40%. Other trim like Reducer, T-Mould, Stairnose and Thresholds are 20% and below.

Example: A 100 square foot room requires 40 lineal feet of Quarter Round and Baseboard.

Is there a stain formula available to match my hardwood floor?

We do not have stain formulas available because our stain is specifically blended for a UV cured finish line. In order to get a stain to match your hardwood floor, we suggest that you take a sample of the wood flooring product as well as the wood you are preparing to stain to the nearest paint store or home center to obtain a custom mixed stain to match the desired color.

Are there any rooms where I should not install hardwood floors?

NH does not recommend hardwood flooring in full bathrooms that have a shower or bathtub. These rooms have the potential for standing water that can cause structural failure in your flooring.

Should I expect color variations in my hardwood floor?

Yes - wood is a product of nature; therefore, you will see variations from board to board in all categories. No two boards are ever the same.

I recently rearranged my furniture and rugs and the flooring is lighter in the now vacant areas. What happened?

All wood changes color to some extent, some species more than others. Light will accelerate this process therefore creating a more noticeable difference in hue where flooring was previously covered. Over a short period of time, the lighter color should catch up with the rest of the floor.
